The economy

Portugal is the industrially-agrarian country. The industry of Portugal substantially depends on import of oil and mineral oil. Commercial extraction of tungsten, tin, chrome is conducted, and tungsten in significant volumes is exported. The coal extracted in Ěîncorvo, is delivered on a steel foundry. Extraction of copper is conducted in Neves-Corvo. Three quarters of all capacities of Portugal is concentrated in two industrial regions: Lisbon in the south and Porto-Braga-Aveiro in the north of the country.

In Lisbon the enterprises oil refining, chemical, steelmaking, car engineering, electronic, pulp-and-paper, the food-processing industry, manufacture of building materials operate. In the north the light industry prevails: Porto makes textiles, footwear, furniture, wine, Ŕveiro — pulp-and-paper products and products from a tree, Braga — clothes, electronics, consumer goods. The third industrial area is located in 140 km to the south from Lisbon in the city-port of Sinishe — fuel power stations here are concentrated.

Participation in European Scientific and technical progress, scientific programs has allowed the country to get access to the advanced European technologies and scientific achievements. Due to reorganization of foreign economic relations, competitiveness of production was possible to raise considerably orientations to hi-tech production. In the Portuguese economy which has become a part of world economic system, the accent on the chemical industry and mechanical engineering which are competitive branches is done.

The agriculture takes 6% in total amount of gross national product of the country. The main agricultural crops are: wheat, barley, corn, rice, potato, grapes, olives, tomatoes. Portugal — is the leader of export of faults, tomatoes and tomato paste. Fishery also has great value in a national economy. In agrarian sector and fishery 12% of the population of the country are borrowed.

Portugal exports clothes and the foodstuffs, machines, production chemical and pulp and paper industry, leather. Imports — machines and transport, mineral oil, production of the chemical industry, textiles, the foodstuffs. The basic trading partners are Spain, Germany, France, Italy.
